The base of the feather shaft is called the CALAMUS, and is implanted in a feather folicle of the skin. During the initial growth of the feather the calamus has two openings, the superior umbilicus and the inferior umbilicus (at the tip of the feather base). These holes are generally closed by small plates after the feather growth is complete.

  560. The RACHIS, or feather shaft, forms the main backbone of the feather. The rachis is usually grooved along the ventral surface to increase its strength in bending.

The VANE is the main functional structure of the feather, providing (depending on location) either an aerodynamic surface or warmth and protection to the skin. In fact, most feathers do both jobs. The outer-most portion of the vane ( the pennaceous portion) forms a strong, smooth surface suitable for flight and the inner vane closest to the skin (the plumulaceous portion) provides a soft, down-like insulation layer.
